<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ron and I had just arrived in Prague and needed a room for the night. We
parked our car and walked for more than an hour, looking for a vacancy.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Rain pelted the sidewalk and it was getting dark, but my husband and I
kept moving. We found ourselves on a street lined with X-rated shows
and “available ladies.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Want a good time, baby?” someone asked.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Does that come with a bed?” I wanted to reply.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Hidden among the flashy clubs was the nondescript Hotel Central. As
we staggered in, a buxom young woman shimmied by, straightening her
dress.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A young man in an elegant gray suit sprang from behind the desk. “Hello, I’m Erik. May I place myself at your service?”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Do you have a room?” asked Ron.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Yes, we have one left, but…. this hotel may not be right for you.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Oh, I’m sure it’s fine,” I said.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“No, you should stay in a more… um… quiet place.” After many phone
calls, Erik found a family-run pension near Hradcany Castle. “The
owner’s daughter is an English translator and will be glad to help you,”
he said. “But the hotel is difficult to find.” That’s when we mentioned
we’d forgotten where we parked our car.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Erik mulled this over. “OK,” he said. “I can get you a taxi for 300
korunas ($13). The driver will help find your auto, then lead you to the
pension.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Soon we heard the roar of an un-muffled engine, accented by clanging
and screeching brakes. Outside was an ancient vehicle that looked ready
to fall apart.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Erik ran out to the cab and leaned on the window, exposing his suit
to the rain. He must have explained the situation, but he failed to get
much of a response.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The driver was draped over the steering wheel, dirty and unshaven,
with greasy hair held back in a ponytail. His clothes were ragged and
ill fitting, and the inside of his car was equally unkempt.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">With a flourish, Erik held the door open and waved us in.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Hello,” I said.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“NO ENGLISH!”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq8_NLxfhHF8t1U5yHoyWV11L8SphcPIPO7F3tkxFAUQLdMMHdUfpV9xdd3wo1m7YegZMn4rVlh7YnkGv2pbVr5-OOBjPcuPAfnN7Kb9embdu9aNNMPtEeqd1CxlamQpWQhyUTZJ4hBJYZ/s1600/praha+12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq8_NLxfhHF8t1U5yHoyWV11L8SphcPIPO7F3tkxFAUQLdMMHdUfpV9xdd3wo1m7YegZMn4rVlh7YnkGv2pbVr5-OOBjPcuPAfnN7Kb9embdu9aNNMPtEeqd1CxlamQpWQhyUTZJ4hBJYZ/s640/praha+12.jpg" width="480" /></a></span></span></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We roared away, careening through streets and parking lots, then dashed
down an alley not much wider than the taxi. The narrow street
dead-ended, and the cabbie slammed on his brakes, ground into reverse
and zoomed backwards.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">He sped towards the Charles Bridge. Knowing we hadn’t parked across
the river, I yelled “HALT!” The driver turned the cab around and, like a
homing pigeon, whisked us back to the Hotel Central.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Erik appeared at the window. “What happened?” he must have asked. The
other man shouted and gesticulated wildly. Erik returned the barrage of
Czech and pounded on the hood of the taxi.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ron broke in meekly: “That’s OK, we’ll find our car on foot, then drive to the pension.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“No!” cried Erik.”You’ll never find the hotel.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our friend turned back to the driver, who finally succumbed with a series of resigned grunts.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We barreled away, retracing the same route. When we got to the bridge
again, Ron yelled “WAIT!!!” Suddenly I remembered parking near Old Town
Square. I found the place on my map and showed it to the cabbie.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“URNGH!” he said, wheeling the car around.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Many streets radiated from the square. “How will we ever find it?” I
asked Ron, peering out the dirt-streaked windows. I couldn’t believe my
eyes when we passed our Fiat.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Stop!” I cried. Ron jumped out of the taxi. His body slumped when
he saw a metal “boot” immobilizing our car and a ticket on the
windshield. The summons was in Czech. We had no idea what to do.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">“Urngh – polizie,” murmured the cab driver, reaching for his cell phone. He made a call and stepped out of the taxi.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Leaning on the hood, he sighed and lit up a cigarette, despite the steadily falling rain.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I wondered if we had enough cash for a fine. Facing the driver, I pointed to my wallet and shrugged my shoulders.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The man was indignant. “Urngh!” he exclaimed, writing 300 with his
finger on the muddy windshield. “I think he means we’ll owe him the same
amount no matter how long he waits,” Ron said, stunned.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Eventually a policeman appeared, with dark, menacing eyes glowering
under his captain’s hat. He lectured us sternly in Czech, then
translated a sign hidden by tree branches: “Private parking.” Ron
expressed great remorse and gave him the 600 korunas ($26) he demanded.
As we waited for him to unlock the boot, I wondered what we would have
done without our taxi driver.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We got into the Fiat and followed the cab, racing down streets,
skidding around circles and crossing three bridges. Occasionally we
lost sight of the driver but found him waiting for us at the side of the
road.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">When we reached the Castle neighborhood, the taxi screeched to a
halt. A clock chimed midnight as we crawled out of our cars in the
darkness. I saw a light in the pension’s lace-covered window.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The three of us stood and looked at each other. I pushed 600 korunas
into the cabbie’s grubby hand. He shook his head at the extra money, but
we refused to take it back. I touched his shoulder and said, “Thank
you.” The man looked down, then raised his eyes to meet mine. He smiled
shyly and spoke, “Is super pension.”</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The cab sputtered away. I approached the inn’s oversized door and
lifted its brass knocker. Before I could let it fall, a dark-haired
beauty appeared in the doorway and smiled. “Welcome to our home.”</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I’ve just arrived in Tuscany when the driver taking me and my friend to our hotel in the countryside interrupts. “See those towers?” he asks, pointing. “That’s San Gimignano; they call it ‘the Manhattan of the Middle Ages.’”
I can just make out a dozen or so stone structures jutting in the distance, and they do resemble skyscrapers.
Then he says something that really catches my attention: “San Gimignano is also famous for saffron.”
That sticks in mind over the next few days. We attend a harvest festival in a camera-ready hilltop hamlet, rise at dawn to spot the famous cinghiale (wild boar), slurp wines in Chianti, but still I can’t stop thinking about saffron.
One night I start Googling and learn that San Gimignano’s towers and its saffron are not isolated characteristics. The skyscrapers—at one time there were 72—were built using wealth generated from the saffron trade, which peaked in the 13th century. San Gimignano’s saffron was regarded as some of the best in the world and was at one point even used in the town as currency. Saffron production died out in the area in the 14th century, and it has only revived in the past decade or so.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDuvDSfHkaldVUEv8nKuGd5OmjapblNCHqFBmPfxPa-XKZ-A8suwALQ6L5qfkEpYoXNh1yj5ZvFgN_x7X5DsZkOThcaAl1tq8DYN4CDq7dbemMBQ-rtGRLGoPhKpDII8WbhnHYuKeBZYgo/s1600/tuscany+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDuvDSfHkaldVUEv8nKuGd5OmjapblNCHqFBmPfxPa-XKZ-A8suwALQ6L5qfkEpYoXNh1yj5ZvFgN_x7X5DsZkOThcaAl1tq8DYN4CDq7dbemMBQ-rtGRLGoPhKpDII8WbhnHYuKeBZYgo/s640/tuscany+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></span></div>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I’m ecstatic: Now I have to see this stuff in person. So the next day my friend and I borrow someone’s rental car and make the 30-minute drive toward the turrets in the distance.
As one of the best preserved medieval towns in Italy, with a walled, pedestrian-only center, San Gimignano is teeming with the tour bus set—they all must have come to score some saffron, I think. Not exactly.
At La Pecora Nera, which specializes in pecorino rounds and finocchiona sausage, I venture, “Inglese?” and the friendly shopkeep says she knows a little.
“I’m looking for lo zafferano,” I announce, trotting out the Italian term I’ve just learned.
She tells me she has some, in a one-gram jar that costs 35 euros. Did I mention saffron happens to be the world’s most expensive spice? Perhaps reading the look on my face, she says I can find a smaller package up the street.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfCxaGpSvl5E9uadOP2R99zOtMBk2ZFcX2ZoDXTutqo3khTnPMutJ34KIUHdOKEGD2CvmNtLfyt8A-cRHnFJtKeun9HW4WYqvdsp8kzrUFGnb4Z7kiArHyoBCS81T27J7iTiwVSMSV62Vz/s1600/tuscany+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfCxaGpSvl5E9uadOP2R99zOtMBk2ZFcX2ZoDXTutqo3khTnPMutJ34KIUHdOKEGD2CvmNtLfyt8A-cRHnFJtKeun9HW4WYqvdsp8kzrUFGnb4Z7kiArHyoBCS81T27J7iTiwVSMSV62Vz/s640/tuscany+6.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></span></div>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Food shops are popular on this touristed stretch, and I stop at each to inquire, in English or my terrible podcast-gleaned Italian, whether they carry lo zafferano. Every place has the stuff sequestered somewhere behind the counter, yet nowhere is there a sign proclaiming “San Gimignano’s Famous Saffron.” I start to wonder why not.
One store clerk provides part of the answer. Seeing me examine a package, with the red script and DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) symbol I’ve seen consistently even if the name of the farm is different, he offers: “Production is very little.”
He explains, “The crocus, whose dried stigmas become the reddish strands we know, only blooms once a year in the fall.” Each flower has three stigmas, and these must be harvested by hand. So, San Gimignano may not be ready to tout its famous saffron until production increases further.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At the fifth shop, I hand over 5.50 euros for a few saffron strands, which I’m told will be “enough for four people.” There are recipes on the package for risotto and budino, but what I really want now is to taste this famous saffron in a dish prepared by an Italian cook. Despite everyone’s claim that “tutti li ristoranti” offer the specialty, I can’t seem to find a single place that mentions it on the menu.
By now it’s late afternoon and many of the regular eateries have closed for a few hours while crowds gather at cafe-bars for an aperitif. Disappointed, I conclude that I won’t taste Tuscan saffron today after all. As we give up and head to the car, I decide to ask the girl at Pecora Nera one more time, and it happens that she knows the perfect place. She writes down a restaurant name, L’Officina del cacio, explaining they make a homemade pasta in saffron sauce. By now we’re running too late for dinner to stop, and I despair I won’t have time to return later. But we make a wrong turn leaving the city, and there’s the restaurant right in front of us.
Imploring my friend to halt the car, I run inside and make a very American request: Can they do takeout? L’Officina del cacio hasn’t even opened for the night, and they’re a strictly eat-in establishment. But the owner must sense my urgency, because she agrees she can make it happen. Which is how I come to be eating the dish in the car ten minutes later.</span></span><br />

They’re stuffed with a soft cheese and swimming in a marigold-colored cream sauce perfumed with the spice’s lightly curried, slightly bitter notes. It’s delicious.
Then when we hit a bump and the whole plate goes flying, hurling my precious pasta to the rental car floor, where it lands in a goopy mess. But it’s okay. Like many before me, I’ve followed the spice route toward the towers to seek the famous saffron of San Gimignano, and I found it.
Plus there’s still that stash in my purse.</span></span><br />

access to Old San Juan, and a relaxed vibe make for a family/couple
friendly espace from NYC. Stay a 1/2 mile down the beach at the Ritz
Carlton for the full poolbar/glam scene or just pop in there for a great

<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="Normal"><span style="color: red;"><b>The British Museum</b></span> is the big one – the
most important museum on the planet. It's an incomparably rich
treasure-chest, brimming with things of world historical importance. The
Rosetta Stone, the Egyptian antiquities and mummies, the Assyrian
lion-hunt reliefs, the Parthenon Sculptures,
the Black Obelisk, the Enlightenment Gallery, 4,500-year-old "Ginger"
(the "pre-dynastic" red head!), the Sutton Hoo treasure, the Portland
Vase, Roman gold, Celtic gold, ivories and enamels, tiles and pottery,
an astonishing display of instruments for measuring time – here is
civilisation, manifest. Here the past turns on its pivots to face the
21st century. The snag is that you can't see for looking – both because
of the embarrassment of riches and the sheer size of the place (the
building covers 13.5 acres – set off in the wrong direction and you have
to walk three times too far). Indeed, <i>how you see it</i> is almost
as important as what you see. "The best commentary on the revolution of
Greek art and the quality of its achievement is...simply to come direct
to the Elgin room from the Egyptian and Assyrian ones, as if into an
explosion of life, even, as in the frieze, of gaiety." Which is by way
of saying, to see these things with a great guide – well, you'll never
be quite the same again. In short, the secret is to use your time at the
British Museum well.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>A</span>fter 4 months in Antigua, we are making
a serious attempt to leave this little oasis. We are continuing
our trip going to El Salvador and Nicaragua within the next few
weeks. For those of you who will one day come to Antigua, we have
compiled a list of some of the best places. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best place to stay is Bonita Casa, 5a. Ave. Sur #21,
tel. 832-0182, Bonitacasa(at)hotmail(dot)com. Rooms
cost 80 to 100 USD per week for singles and 120 to 140 USD for
doubles. Has real hot water (which is rare here) and a swimming
pool (also rare).
The staff and the owner, Claudia, are extremely friendly,
stay too long and it will feel like home. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best Internet Cafe is Café Internet Telgua,
6a Ave. Norte #21, get an account and pay 50 GTQ for 7 hours
(which comes down to 0.85 EUR per hour). It is not only the
cheapest in town, but also the fastest. The place is clean and
smoke free (nothing as horrible as when your neighbor
starts to puff away cigarette after cigarette, as happens in many
other Internet Cafes in town).
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>S</span>econd
best Internet Cafe: Funky Monkey, 5a. Ave. del Sur
They play good music but this can make it a bit difficult to concentrate.
Cheap place to read your digital camera's memory card and
place the contents on a CD. Cost: 50 Quetzal (5.50 EUR). </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best place to watch movies is Cinema Café Bistro,
5a. Ave. Sur #14, it has 3 theatres with 4 showings per day
for 15 GTQ (1.75 EUR). The owner, Vini, is very friendly.
Seeing him start the movie can be quite entertaining in
itself, especially if there is a little problem he needs to solve. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best disco is Casbah, 5a. Ave. Norte (near the arch),
Wednesday is one of the most popular nights. Thursday is gay night.
Entry is quite expensive at 20 to 30 Quetzals (2.35 to 3.50 EUR),
at least it is for Antigua. Upside is you get one free drink
and they are not focused only on salsa and merengue. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best place for pies, is La Cenicienta (which means Cinderella),
5a. Ave. Norte #7, my favorite is their strawberry cheese cake. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>T</span>he
best bakery is Doña Luisa, 4a. Calle Oriente, has nice freshly baked bread. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span>O</span>ne
of our favorite restaurants is Beijing, 5a Calle poniente,
which unlike the name suggests also serves Japanese food.
Not only is the food great but it is very affordable, especially
for Japanese food. </span></span><br />

<br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>East London</b>, while not being an immediate tourist destination, offers
a sensation of culture and colour and for those looking to be inspired
when it comes to interior design you can find a huge amount of spark
within the streets that home Bricklands, Excel and the impressive
corporate city sensation that is Canary Wharf.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Places you simply must visit to help generate ideas to kick start your creative design impulses include:</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span>
<span style="color: red;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>The </b><b>Geffrye Museum, Hoxton</b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For anyone with an interest in interior design the Geffrye Museum is a
must see, the collections within the museum show how homes have been
lived in and furnished over the last four hundred years. You can walk
through the ages starting in the seventeenth century and follow how
fashion dictated style and how changes in society were reflected in the
home. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The Geffrye Museum leaves one wondering how tastes and styles will
change over the next few decades when you see firsthand how
significantly design has changed through the years. Increation, an E14 interior design based company offer their thoughts on this</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">‘Something we have been doing for a while but really coming into the
for in Interior design is the use of organic form and shapes. This plus a
return to a little glamour. Many clients are tired of the minimalist
look.’</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span>
<span style="color: red;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Brick Lane</b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Brick Lane is a massive source of inspiration; whilst is
predominantly renown for good curries it is also home to a host of
graffiti artists including, probably the most famous being Banksy. One
cannot fail to get motivated by the overwhelming diversity in taste and
eclectic mesh of colours that you find in this corner of the capital
city.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span>
<span style="color: red;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Whitechapel Gallery</b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This beautiful artistic haven offers gorgeous displays of
contemporary art and has featured and premiered a range of artists from
Pollock to Picasso. It reopened in 2009 following a major redesign and
is known through London as highlighting challenging pieces of art and
being an eye opening experience for those looking to get excited about
art. If you are looking to be inspired this is the place to go.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span>
<span style="color: red;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Broadway Market</b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For a taste of true East London head over to Broadway market for an
alternative to Portobello Road. You will find fewer stalls but a
vibrancy and essence that are quintessecially East London and leaves you
feeling full of the richness this side of London has to offer.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Of course the escapades of last year cannot go unnoticed and East
London hosts a feeling of memorabilia following the 2012 Olympic Games,
inspiration can be gleaned here as you walk the streets around Stratford
living the glorious memories that were created through the summer, you
can hear the whisper of the crowd in the silence of the street and see
the legacy of hundreds of talented sports men and women imprinted on the
pavements.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
</span></span><span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Who could fail to not be inspired by that?</span></span><br />

city that lives parallel lives cause each newly discovered world is a complete

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><i>Please, No Bear Wrestling in Alabama</i></span></span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><i> </i></span></span></h2>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Laws don't write themselves. A
dedicated legislator has to recognize a pressing need for a law, write
the law up in the form of a bill, submit the bill to various committees
and debates where it's scrutinized and massaged, and finally put the
bill to a vote. If legislators pass the bill, it can finally be signed
into law. So, creating a law is a long, difficult process -- which means
bear wrestling must have been a really big problem in Alabama. In fact,
that's how "Bear" Bryant, a man who would become the legendary
University of Alabama football coach, earned his nickname.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Now you might be thinking bear
wrestling is outlawed by extension of another law, maybe one barring
cruelty to animals or animal fighting of any kind -- be it dog, rooster
or bear -- but no. Alabama devotes an entire section of its legal code
to bear wrestling-related offenses, which make everything from training a
bear to wrestle to charging admission to a bear wrestling match a class
B felony.</span></span><br />

Hot dogs are a quintessential American food, and you’ll find dogs done
right at this family stand. You can get your dogs loaded up with all
kinds of savory toppings that are bad for your health but so good on the
way down. There are also vegetarian-friendly menu items for non-meat
eaters, so everyone can get in on the action at Pink’s.</span><br />

highly rated Italian restaurant, where you’ll find excellent pasta and
meat dishes that will satisfy you and all your travel companions. It’s
ranked number 10 in Los Angeles by Zagat’s.</span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Echigo </b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Having a yen for good Japanese? Head to this joint, where you can
enjoy perfectly fresh and delectable fish courses and other delectable
dishes on this renowned menu. Zagat ranks this one at number eight in
the city, so you really can’t go wrong here.</span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Patina </b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">This one is not for the frugal traveler but if you’re willing to

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Loteria </b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">If a meal at Patina is unrealistic for you, head to Loteria, at the
Los Angeles Farmer’s Market. The vibe here is low-key and prices for the
delicious, fresh tortillas are budget friendly. Other items on offer
include veggie versions of the tortillas and yummy tortilla soup.</span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><b>Pizzeria Mozza </b></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Any venture involving Mario Batali is going to be a good one, so it
comes as no surprise that Pizzeria Mozza serves up some the tastiest and
most sophisticated pizzas in the city. Here you’ll find classic pies
and more innovative takes on the pizza, as well as melt-in-your-mouth,
out-of-this-world baked goods.</span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

Italian food that will surpass most other meals you’ll eat in the area
and the reportedly romantic ambiance will set the mood for a special
night with your significant other.</span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

Hollywood’s hottest young stars, head over to STK for a good meal and a
good schmooze. The meats, of course, are excellent but the side dishes
are equally delectable and all reflect the innovative, slightly
off-the-wall flare that hot Los Angeles eateries are known for. </span><br />

The author of <i>Tom Sawyer</i> and<i> Huckleberry Finn</i> is known

start, with a history of the river, this 1883 book leads into an
entertaining account of Twain’s career as a steamboat pilot. The final

river many years after he stopped being a pilot and had become the most

John Steinbeck is my all-time favourite writer, as discovering his novels like <i>Cannery Row</i> and <i>The Grapes of Wrath</i>
as a teenager turned reading for me into a pleasure not a chore. It was
also through him and Hemingway that I discovered a love for America. In<i> Travels with Charley</i>
Steinbeck took to the road with his French poodle Charley in an old
camper van. He does a circuit of the country, talking to people, and
musing, and produced an insightful look at his country at a pivotal
time, as the 1950s gave way to the 1960s.</span></span><br />

My wife gave me this book as a gift when we were planning our first
American road trip together, from Denver through the Rocky Mountains to
Salt Lake City – and back again by a different route. <i>Desert Solitaire</i>
is an evocative account of the author’s time as a park ranger in Arches
National Monument (now a National Park) near Moab, which we visited. It
is one of the finest pieces of nature writing about the USA, and about
the deserts of the American South-West, which we now call home.</span></span><br />

John McPhee writes about the natural world with an acute observation, in
lovely, lyrical prose. I bought this book as background reading for a
visit to Alaska, and it was one of those wonderful chance buys that
turned me on to both a fine writer and a fascinating part of the USA. It
captures the history, landscapes, wildlife, and people of that
remarkable state, from the Native Americans to the settlers and hunters,
the bush pilots, and those scrabbling to make a living from this tough
land.</span></span><br />

In 1973 Peter Jenkins, a 22-year-old graduate, decided to take his dog
for a walk. The walk was from New York to Oregon, and to make it more
interesting he went the long way round – via New Orleans. This first
book describes the section of the walk from New York to New Orleans, and
what makes it so special are the encounters with the wonderfully varied
American people he meets. When you’re travelling in the States, you do
meet a marvellously diverse range of people, who for the most part are
overwhelmingly hospitable and entertaining, if not downright eccentric. <i>A Walk Across America: The Walk West</i> is the second part of the author’s epic trek.</span></span><br />

One of the finest observers of American life and land is an Englishman,
Jonathan Raban. He eventually made the American North-West his home and
you could pick any one of his US books in your top choices. <i>Hunting Mr Heartbreak, Bad Land, Passage to Juneau</i>, and <i>Driving Home</i> are all entertaining and beautifully-written. My real favourite, though, is the award-winning <i>Old Glory</i>,
in which the author takes a small boat down the Mississippi with his
friend: Jack Daniels. There are as many misadventures as adventures in
an insightful book about the South from this highly talented writer.</span></span><br />

William Least Heat-Moon, who has a mixed Osage-English-Irish ancestry,

living in the back of a van and sticking to what he called the ‘blue

was drawn to places with names like Remote, New Hope, Simplicity, and
Nameless, and his questing book rightly became a huge best-seller.</span></span><br />

‘I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to.’ Those are the opening words
of Bill Bryson’s first travel book, and he went on to become one of the
best-selling travel writers of all time. I find his writing both
hilarious and acutely-observed – it’s hard to be funny unless you are
observant, but this account of two journeys made after the death of his
father is touching too. For all its scathing humour, it’s a fond account
of life in the MidWest and the innate goodness of the people who live
there. I married someone from Iowa, so the truth and funniness of the
book came through all the more on a recent re-reading.</span></span><br />

In 1992 the emaciated body of a young man, Chris McCandless, was found
inside an abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness. The writer Jon
Krakauer was drawn to the haunting story, and went to Alaska to try to
trace the man’s journey, and find out what happened to him. Growing out
of a magazine article, the book combines strong journalism with

First published in 2000 as <i>Prayer and the Art of Volkswagen Maintenance</i>,
this book sank without trace. On its republication five years later
under a more appropriate title it became a road trip classic. The book
is imbued with Miller’s Christian faith, and through it he describes an
America that is spiritual, uplifting, and also great fun, as he journeys
around in a camper van with his friend Paul. As with some of the other
books on my list, like <i>Travels with Charley</i> or <i>A Walk Across America</i>, it is the people of America who make the book special.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The day we saw Petra will stay with me for the rest of my life, just
like other memories from the Middle East: first time in a mosque, at
the pyramids, in Karnak temple, in a hot-air balloon over
Luxor..However, this experience was different than all the other ones.
So, I'll do my best to take you there with me, while reliving this
particular memory.<br />We woke up in our first day in Wadi Musa, without
having any idea about what lied ahead.Zachary and Hillary whom we've
recently met, joined us for breakfast and some small talk, the kind you
have in the morning when the sleep still lingers on your eye
lashes. The hotel provided us with a free ride to the Petra entrance, so
around 9:00 o'clock in the morning we were already buying our tickets -
which included a horse ride for the first 800 meters. We slipped into
the saddle and enjoyed the ride. Nice experience.. it brought back some
long forgotten memories from my childhood, when I used to ride the
neighbors' horses ..without them knowing. For the next 20 minutes we
just walked in amazement through the Siq; a 1200 meters long path
waving in a claustrophobic-ally narrow, red colored canyon, cut into
rocks by plate tectonic movement. The sky scraping rock walls surrounding
the Siq, made us feel like hobbits in a giants' people land.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Just when we started getting used with the canyon, we got a glimpse of
Petra: the "Treasury" lied ahead, at the end of the path.A few applause
started from the Asian group in front of us; we just said "WOW", then -
of course - we started taking photos.<br />As we learned later, this IS
NOT Petra, it's just the image widely associated with the city. Bear
with me until we discover it, but before that - a bit of history: <span style="font-size: 85%;">"Petra,
the fabled "rose red city, half as old as time", is a well known
ancient Nabataean city in the south of Jordan. Due to its breathtaking
grandeur and fabulous ruins, Petra was recognized as a World Heritage
Site by UNESCO in 1985. Petra was the impressive capital of the
Nabataean kingdom from around the 6th century BC. The kingdom was
absorbed into the Roman Empire in AD 106 and the Romans continued to
expand the city. An important center for trade and commerce, Petra
continued to flourish until a catastrophic earthquake destroyed
buildings and crippled vital water management systems around AD 663.
After Saladin's conquest of the Middle East in 1189, Petra was
abandoned and the memory of it was lost to the West"

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">After reading a short description from our small guide received with
the tickets, we all discussed about the path that should be followed
next.Zack and Hillary wished to see the monastery, while we preferred
to follow the Lonely Planet guide and go to the High Place of
Sacrifice. So, we decided that it's best to split, see each location
and then meet around noon for sharing of impressions and also for
having a quick snack (we carried a couple of falafel sandwiches, since
we were warned about the hunger that will quickly follow the climbing).<br />A
few more minutes sharing the same road and we all reached the steep
path that climbed to the top of the mountain: a 45 minutes climb. A last
look at the map,to make sure we're in the right place (as there were
no signs, or any modern changes for that matter), then a final goodbye,
a deep breath and off we went - following a boy mounted on a donkey -
moving a lot faster than we did.<br />The way up was the same one used by
the Nabataeans people when performing processions on top of the
mountain; same stairs, same waived, steep path baring only the stamp of
time.In the first 15 minutes we kept stopping for taking photos of the
valley bellow, but after getting used to the image, we started
speeding up.At some point, some wings flapping above our heads make us
stop again, trying to capture a decent photo with the black birds
nesting in the rocks.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Darn, the landscape lens was mounted on the camera.. not the right one
for such a photo.. I decide to keep it for now and change it with the
wildlife one, only after taking the panoramic view from the top of the
mountain.A few more steps and Andra discovers some nicely colored
rocks, having layers upon layers of different colors. Just like the
stones being sold, down in the valley, by the Bedouin kids. She takes
two of them and we continue climbing, but not for long: we reach a
point where the rock edges look perfect for resting and we couldn't
resist the temptation to sit close to the abyss, with the feet dangling
over the ledge.<br />Andra starts moving again. I stand up and
follow. For the next 20 minutes we're hiking up the same waived path,
that is leading us through a constantly changing landscape. We're still
surrounded by rock walls, so everything should be routine by now, but
it's not. The walls have vines of different composition, with
ever-changing color and pattern.<br />Some Bedouin women and kids have set
up camp along this path and they nicely ask us to join for tea or to
do some shopping in their taverns. Another 10 minutes and we're finally
almost close to the top. At this point, we can only see portions from
the valley bellows ..images sneaking to us through small gaps between
huge blocks of colored rock.<br />A small, single flower rising directly
from the sand, near the path, makes us stop for one minute. Then a
weirdly blue colored bush, growing directly into the stone.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A few more meters and we finally stand on one of the highest peeks from
the area, surrounded on all sides by the end of the world.Only now we
can wrap our heads around the magnitude of what was once the Petra
city: we now see the roads, the theater, a temple, hundreds of tombs
and other structures that we can't identify. But even from this
position, we don't see quite everything. So, after 10 minutes of
enjoying the scenery, we continue discovering the surroundings. We find
another rock ledge suitable for some more resting on the edge of the
abyss, so I decide to sit down. The adrenaline kicks in as I sit and
look directly into the valley below.Andra is not that happy about me
staying in such a dangerous location, but she does takes some photos.<br />We
continue to move around. Before too long, we stumble upon a male
lizard, brightly colored in a vivid light blue. The lizard becomes our
new focus for the next 5 minutes.I change lenses and hunt the creature
through the rocks, managing in the end to have it within arm's reach.<br />After
wondering around for some more time, we discover a large room cut
directly into the rock, in the same manner that makes up the entire
Petra city. The sheer size of this room is overwhelming, especially when
trying to imagine the Nabataeans using old tools to make their way
through the hard rock.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #073763;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We continue the descent, manage to get lost and then find the path
again, just in time to meet with our new friends in the valley we left a
few hours back.We pick a shady spot and wait for them. Some Bedouin
kids notice us and - in no time - we're helplessly surrounded. They
touch Andra's hair, necklace, watch; they ask me to take some photos
with them while wearing my glasses, then they joke around about
each-other.After 10 intensive minutes, we're saved by a large group of
international tourists. The kids run to them, hoping to sell some of
the post cards they're carrying.<br />After having a quick snack, we all
run away from the heat that keeps rising, and find refuge in the
hotel's rooms - vowing to return to this magnificent place. We do it in
the late evening, only to discover that we're almost alone out there.
The crowds of tourists have vanished, letting us alone with some
Bedouins and the echo.<br />The setting sun makes the color stand out
from the rocks, and it looks like the shaded ones have turned brick
red.We find a good spot near the old theater and watch the barrier
between the shade and the light going up fast.<br />As a fitting end to
this experience, we get to see Petra's transformation that comes at
night: from the washed out color - to the new, strong reddish one.We go
back towards the exit, surrounded by wildlife presence and its
specific sounds, feeling that we leave behind an unfinished experience
and a ghostly city that slowly comes back to life with the falling
night. </span></span><br />

The five-resort mega complex will undergo a $45 million investment in

alley, teen disco, new kids club, watermark, paddle tennis courts and a
redesign of the 18-hole mini golf course. But there's more. Upgrades
will also be made to the internal infrastructure. The first phase
includes expansion of the lobbies, construction of a new Lobby Bay, new
Premium Lounge Club, new hospitality area, construction of roofed area

slated to debut this year. The 452-room resort will open in late 2013 in
Litibu, located at the north end of the Banderas Bay. The new,
all-inclusive property will have two pools, a Kids Club, four specialty
restaurants, three bars and meeting facilities. Guest will also have
access to the nearby Greg Norman-designed 18-hole championship golf
course. This will be IBEROSTAR's 10th property in Mexico. Tau Resorts is
a new development group focusing on creating high-quality timeshare
resorts in Pacific Mexico. Two are planned for Riviera Nayarit, one of
which will open this year. <b>Tau Resorts Nahui</b> will open
in late 2013 with a total of 172 units in two-bedroom configurations.
Community amenities will include a village, Beach Club, golf course,
hiking trails and oceanfront water sports center. Finally, the <b>Grand Luxxe Nuevo Vallarta</b>,
a Grupo Vidanta resort, opened in February 2010 with 108 rooms. By the
end of November 2011, 288 more rooms were added. There is currently a
